My latest creations

I have been working on more little critters via my new crochet hobby! I know these are my first ones...so of course there will be some mistakes here. I need to get some better little eyes so they are not just plain black. I enjoy crocheting the pieces, but am not so fond of sewing them together. I will get better though...I just need practice =)

I still need to do this little guy's arms =) They will be just like his legs...white with lavender ends.

Here is miss kitty. I really like her because she has a little dress that you can take on and off.

And here is the duck I made for our friends birthday this weekend. She is turning One - and ducks are her favorite animal.

The Mall

Here we are at the mall today. We met our friend Rebbecca for lunch and went to visit friends at my old job. It was a fun day! Rebbecca took this with her phone!

PPPssssssssss

Tonight after dinner I put Adelaide on the potty and made the pppssssss sound that I always make to try and tell her to go pee. She was being so cute and funny and making the sound back to me, but not a drop of pee came out.

Several minutes later Myles was getting her ready for the bath. I hear her in there making the pppssssss sound, and then all of a sudden Myles says "Oh Adelaide" and I hear a bunch of rushing around and the bath going. I knew something funny had to have happened.

I go in the room to ask what happened, and Myles tells me that she was making that cute little sound and he set her down for one second to get something for her bath and all of a sudden she was peeing! There was pee all over the floor, but apparently she was standing in her crib?! So I guess she tried to tell him that she had to go, he mustn't have believed that she knew what she was talking about, so she politely stood at the edge of her crib and managed to direct her pee straight out the side and onto the floor. Does this mean she's potty trained?

Books that I'm reading

I have no idea how I have time to read. Most nights I'm so pooped by the time I get in bed...but there is something about taking a few minutes to read that makes me feel like I'm getting to relax. I try to read at least a page or two. Sometimes I will read when I'm trying to get Punkie down for her nap, or on the weekends. I have so many things I want to read all of the time. Right now I'm reading one of the most amazing books I've found. I've got 3 books going on right now and I'd like to talk about each of them.

The first is a book I just got at the library. I picked it up because of the big changes that Adelaide has had in terms of her temper etc. I know she is growing and things are normal, but it's nice to read. The book is called Your One-Year-Old: The Fun-Loving, Fussy 12-To 24-Month-Old. It has totally validated everything that we've been going through, which just makes me realize that there is nothing I'm doing wrong to cause her to act this way. I am still in the beginning of the book, but think I'll probably read the entire series because so far everything has been very accurate. It's short and to the point. It talks about their eating, sleeping, play habits etc. I just really like it because it's easy to pick up and read for just a minute or two, and I feel like I always want to be reading at lest one book about my baby.

The second book is called The Elegance of the Hedgehog. I heard a yoga teacher mention it once and that was enough for me to buy it. It's a novel partly about a 12 year old genius girl who plans to commit suicide when she turns 13, but before hand is writing down her amazing thoughts. I have to admit sometimes I wonder if I'm actually smart enough to read this book, it seems to be for the smarty pant big vocabulary type people...but so far I get it. The other character is the concierge for the apartment building (it's based in Paris) and she is ugly and has giant bunions ( I love bunions) and seems to have some great things to say about life as well. Overall I think it's a book about life, and I like it. The reviews say it's sad...so we will see where it takes me.

Lastly is the most amazing of all books so far - Anam Cara:a book of Celtic Wisdom. I don't know what it is about this book, but I think I must have just found it at the right time. It's amazingly spiritual without being religious, and it really makes you think about things differently. This is the book that my yoga teacher did a reading from that I couldn't forget about. It's a book that I plan to read over and over, and I think it has something for everyone in it. It's poetic, philosophical, and just beautiful. Here is part of a section called "Love as Ancient Recognition" that really touched me. I hope it makes sense on it's own...

"Real friendship or love is not manufactured or achieved by an act of will or intention. Friendship is always an act of recognition. This metaphor of friendship can be grounded in the clay nature of the human body. When you find the person you love, and act of ancient recognition brings you together. It is as if millions of years before the silence of nature broke, your lover's clay and your clay lay side by side. Then in the turning of the seasons, your one clay divided and separated. You began to rise as distinct clay forms, each housing a different individuality and destiny. Without even knowing it, your secret memory mourned your loss of each other. While your clay selves wandered for thousands of years through the universe, your longing for each other never faded....."

If you are any sort of spiritual journy what so ever - I highly reccomend the book.

So what are all of you reading out there? My other favorite book of all time is called Angela's Ashes. It took me years to finally read it because I thought it was a dumb name for a book - but it is my favorite ever now - and I love the name too.

Toddler time

Adelaide has definitely been growing into her own person more and more. She has started whining when she doesn't get what she wants. I guess that goes along with the temper tantrums. It's just amazing to see that she realizes that she is her own person with her own opinions. It makes the days a little bit harder, but in the end I know it's good that she is going through this and it's a normal progression. She is still very clingy to me, and usually wants to be held a lot. That might be because she is still sick....but I hope it ends soon. I really can't leave her at all, even to go to the bathroom!

She still is not walking, and sometimes I feel like she might never. She gets brave and will stand on her own, so maybe she will be walking by Easter? I guess we will see. I don't think she has anything wrong physically- I think she is just very cautious!

She talks a LOT! She will try and say anything..and when she starts to say a word she will keep repeating it until you figure out what she is saying and say it back to her. Sometimes this can take a few guesses...and she goes crazy. She is using her sign language as well, and I think that really helps her to communicate. She is already such a talker...look out!

Right now she is OBSESSED with bikes. If she sees one on the street, or on her clothes, or in a magazine...or her own bike. Now that we have the bike seat for her, it's all she wants to do. Our friends got her a sweatshirt with a bike on it for my baby shower, and each day she goes to her dresser and points to it saying "bike, bike" until I give her the shirt to wear, or put it on her bear. She loves bikes!!!

Another cold

Punkie is sick again =( It's probably my fault for taking her on that cold bike ride. Her nose is plugged and she can hardly nurse, but has figured out a way to do it without breathing. I think I was getting sick too, but got a Neti pot the other day and I think it saved me! I feel so sad for her when she doesn't feel well. Today we just stayed home and rested. She wanted me to snuggle with her in the rocking chair a lot, and it was raining outside so I was in heaven holding my baby! I'm hoping that tomorrow is better.

New Garden Box

My wonderful husband made us the most beautiful garden box! Just look at this fancy thing! His dad helped him plan it out and get the materials together, and then he cut and assembled it all himself. What a man! This year our garden will be bigger than before, and it will look so nice! He even made a shelf on the edge so we have a place to set things when we are working out there. Now we just need to get some dirt over here and some seeds started. I can't wait to see Adelaide out there in the dirt =)

Chicken soup for the Womens Soul

Time is running out for my friend:

We are sitting at lunch when she casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of "starting a family." What she means is that her biological clock has begun its countdown and she is considering the prospect of motherhood.

"We're taking a survey," she says, half jokingly. "Do you think I should have a baby?"

"It will change your life," I say carefully.

"I know," she says. "No more sleeping in on Saturdays, no more spontaneous vacations..."

But that is not what I mean at all.

I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of childbirth heal, but that becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will be forever vulnerable.

I consider warning her that she will never read a newspaper again without asking "What if that had been my child?" That every plane crash, every fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will look at the mothers and wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.

I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think she should know that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will immediately reduce her to the primitive level. That a slightly urgent call of "Mom!" will cause her to drop her best crystal without a moment's hesitation.

I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might successfully arrange for child care, but one day she will be waiting to go into an important business meeting, and she will think about her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure he is all right.

I want my friend to know that everyday routine decisions will no longer be routine. That a visit to Mc Donald's and a five year old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's room will become a major dilemma. That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that danger may be lurking in the rest room.

I want her to know that however decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother. Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but will never feel the same about herself. That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give it up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years, not so much to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish his.

I want her to know that a cesarean scar or stretch marks will become badges of honor.

My friend's relationship with her husband will change, but not in the ways she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is always careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his son. I think she should know that she will fall in love with her husband again for reasons she would never have imagined.

I wish my modern friend could sense the bond she will feel with other women throughout history who have tried desperately to stop war and prejudice and drunk driving.

I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration of seeing your son learn to hit a baseball. I want to capture for her the laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real that it hurts.

My friend's quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes.

"You'll never regret it," I say finally.

Tantrums and potty time

I can't believe the age of tantrums is already upon us! For the last few days Adelaide has really begun to show her fussy side when she doesn't get what she wants. Yesterday she actually threw herself on the floor screaming because she couldn't play with the remote (which we have never let her play with). She has also begun to tantrum when it's time for her diaper change. Anytime she doesn't get what she wants - she fusses and yells and pretends to cry. I know this is normal and good for her, but I hope we can get through it as fast as it came on! I thought this didn't happen until they turn two!

The other big thing is that Adelaide has been going to the bathroom in the toilet a LOT. Whenever I check her diaper and its dry, I then hold her over the toilet, and most of the time she will pee! She obviously has control to hold it, and control to let it out! She has also done this pooping for the past week or so. Even if I have no idea that she needs to go, she will plop it out when I'm holding her over the potty. We are excited to get some training pants to make this easier. As soon as she starts walking on her own I'm going to start teaching her to pull her pants up and down =)

Another bike ride - in the wind!

Today Adelaide and I took a long bike ride. She really loves it and points to everything she sees and names it "tree, tree, tree, doggy, baby, tree, tree). It's really fun with this front seat because she is right there so I can hug her, hear her and talk to her the whole time. I'm getting a little bit more comfortable with her there, although I seriously have never been so careful on a bike in my life. It got windy on our way home and she got really cold, poor thing! Today she was very excited about every bike we saw, so I know the wind must not have bothered her too much. Here are some more pictures of us on the bike, this time I'm sitting on there so you can see how close she is to me. This is the wee-ride kangaroo seat. It's very secure and seems comfortable for her.

Don't mind my dorky helmet and glasses - just notice how I Adelaide's cute little hat has a brim enough to shade her eyes! So cute!

Inez

This is Inez. She is my great-grandmothers sister. She is 92 years old, and so amazing. Adelaide really loves her. Her daughter lives in Salem (about an hour away) and we go to visit her each time she is at her daughters house. We have really gotten to spend time with her since Adelaide has been born, and I love that. She makes beautiful quilts and loves to eat Kale. I cherish each time we get to be with her.

Our Beautiful day

We started out listening to records ~

We played with Buddha while he tried to sleep ~
Then Adelaide tried on all of my scarfs ~
We sang "baby beluga" to the wale on her sweater ~
It was really sunny outside so we played in the grass with Bug ~

And then Judy came over for a walk around our yard =)

(I also did another photo shoot - but that's for another post)

Tootoo and Buddy

Today I did another doggy photo shoot. It's hard to get these guys to hold still at all - but somehow I feel like I got really lucky again! I am loving my new lens and know that it's a good investment. Now I just need to start making money! To see the rest of this shoot please see my photo website!

Crochet - my first project =)

My New Year's resolution was to learn to crochet. I have tried many times, but never have been able to succeed. I am pretty good at knitting, but there are lots of cute things you can do with crochet that you can't do with knit. I have seen some amazing flowers and little toys and every time I find a pattern I want to try, it seems that it's for crochet and not knit. It's also faster, so maybe I'll be able to finish a blankie someday!

I learned to knit by reading and using the book Stitch 'N Bitch. It has seriously taught me everything I know about knitting. I decided to go with the same author (after trying several other crochet books)and bought Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet - Happy Hooker because I figure if she taught me to knit, she can also teach me to crochet. I was right! The book is great so far, and I've been able to do things (like crochet in a circle) that I haven't been able to figure out with the other books.

Here is my first project. I got the pattern from the book Creepy Cute Crochet, which is full of adorable little creatures to make. I think he turned out pretty good, and Adelaide LOVES him! We have lots of little skeletons around here, we love them and Day of the Dead stuff. I ended up doing his eyes different because I didn't want to use anything that could be a chocking hazard. I wonder if Adelaide thinks he is a Panda!? =) I am planning on making his bride next.

Happy Valentines Day

Myles got me the most beautiful flowers I have seen yet!

Tulip

Today I did a mini photo shoot of Tulip. It was great practice and I learned a lot about my new lens. She is such a great model! How could anyone get bad shots of this adorable thing?!

First Newborn Photo Shoot!

Last night I did my very first official Newborn photoshoot! It was VERY fun - and I'm really happy to see how they turned out. If you want to see my photography site it's at www.alishaphoto.com - check it out and let me know what you think! I love to hear honest opinoins to help my business be better =)

Dress Up and a new lense

Adelaide's favorite thing to do right now is put on hats and scarfs. She likes to dress up. Here she is with her hat, scarf AND crown on! It was so cute. I got a new lens for my camera too so I was having fun testing it out on my favorite model. She was admiring herself in the mirror.

09 February 2010

Bike Seat and Helmet

Today I got a bike seat for Adelaide so she can ride my bike with me! It's really fun - she rides in front of me, so I can talk to her and have my arms around her while we ride. She LOVES it! Here we are getting ready to ride around the neighborhood. Notice her cute new helmet too!

08 February 2010

Tutu

I never had a tutu growing up, but that doesn't mean Adelaide doesn't need one! You can bet your bottom dollar I've been waiting for her to be old enough to have one! It's actually a bathing suite I found at Target. I had to try it on as soon as we got home. I think she's pretty freakin cute! You be the judge!

ALSO - the sun has been out - it's been beautiful! The fog is here in the morning so you think it's going to be a cold rainy day, then around noon the clouds part and we have sunshine!!!
